Sometimes bigger diameter plugs can be rotated in their bore by driving one side inward with a punch, then grabbing the side that's sticking out with channel pliers. Otherwise you can punch a hole in the plug (in the center of a small plug or the outside edge of a large plug) with an awl or a small, sharp punch, screw a sheet metal screw or lag screw into the hole, then use a couple of pry bars under the head of the screw to pull the plug out. Tip: when going back together, be sure not to put enough of any kind of sealer on the core plugs that it can clog an oil (or water) galley!
