I own a 51 to-20. am planning an engine rebuild. bought the rebuild kit, sleeves, pistons, rings, bearings, etc, from central tractor. can i do this in place or do i need to split the tractor? any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. thanx kurt larson [email protected]

I just rebuilt my TO-20 I split the tractor to pull the crankshaft out to check it and make sure that it was within tolerance. I suppose that you could leave it in and slide the mains around the journals to get them in place. I personally do not reccomend this. You wouldn't be able to replace the rear seal either. You will have to make sure that your main and rod bearings are the right size for your crankshaft, in case it has been previously been turned down or is excessively worn. Your old bearings should be marked with the oversize on the back if it has been turned before. My block went to the machine shop to be hot tanked and have the sleeves and cam bearings put in. I don't have a sleeve puller and the cam tool that I have only fits a small block Chevy. It is a pretty straight foreward assembly, although I thought that some of the clearances were rather tight. The hardest part, I think, was to get the crankshaft endplay correct. It took a couple of tries. I hope this helps. let me know how you make out. JEFF

When I did our MH50 with the Z134 gas engine, I split it. If you are working on a concrete floor and have or rent a "cherry picker" hoist and a hydraulic jack, it is not that bad. Support the front of the trans with a tree stump or other sturdy stand, once the engine is unbolted from it.

I also pulled the front end off the engine. There are guys who don't do this. I think the successful ones will tell you to block the front end so the front axle won't pivot once the block is free from the trans. Be careful lining everything up when you put it back together that way too.

Once the clutch and flywheel are off the engine you can put the engine up on an engine stand (if you took the front end off) and then it goes right along.

Make sure you put that number three main bearing shell in the right way.
