I am trying to identify an old MF tractor that has been modified with a front end loader. There is a plate on the Front end loader that reads "MF 235 1992 ...." I am not sure if it belongs to this tractor or a previous one the loader was installed on.

The tractor is diesel with approx 2900 hours and supposedly about 50 hp

any help would be appreciated

I did find a serial number on the tractor itself and not on the front end loader. It was hard to read and most of the printing was flaked off but the embossed serial number was SDNW 695781 The guy who sold it to my father claimed that it was either a MF 35 or Mf 135 from the 1960's and had a 50 hp engine.

Looking through all the S/N's for Massey Ferguson's on this site it appears to be a 1963 MF-65. Using the photo pages I found some pictures and it looks like that is it. Can anyone tell me any information about this tractor? How much horsepower, etc..

I brought in my manuals today. It says that the Direct injection Diesel initiated at SN 685409 which would agree with the current assessment of a perkins AD4.203 engine.

The serial plate is on the dash as you have probably found should have 3 letters then the serial number.

SDNW is confusing as it would read a Standard (i.e. wide low front axle) with a standard and Perkins diesel engine and multi-power. I agree it looks like a '63 MF-65

Look at the engine and see if you can determine the make.
These are great tractors and I have one myself. Love it.

Hope that helps Jeff-oh

Here are the Ferguson/MF prefixes used during that era: S Standard/Utility C High Clearance/Hi-arch
R Row-crop two wheel
T Row-crop single wheel
J Industrial/multi-purpose
V Vineyard

G Gasoline
H High altitude gasoline
B L. P. G.
D Standard Diesel
N Perkins Diesel
K Vaporizing Oil (TVO)
L Lamp oil

F Single-stage clutch
M Dual-stage clutch
Y Differential lock
W Multi-power

Thanks, that helps some. I have ordered the manuals from this site. BTW, the serial number on this tractor isn't on the dash it is on the left side just behind the engine. I can't make out much of the manufacturers info plate as it is badly degraded and the front end loader is in the way. It appears to say it was made in Canada. I don't know what the differences are between the standard diesel and the Perkins but this one says it was made in England so I am assuming that it is a Perkins and that they used DN for Perkins Diesel instead of just N. Perhaps this was a minor difference with the Canadian version.

A few more quick questions. Is the front engine mounted PTO a factory option or is it aftermarket. I was told it was used to run a hydraulic pump for an older front end loader. The loader on it now has an ID plate from a MF 235 and MF decals. It obviously wasn't designed for the tractor as the installer had to build a new sub-frame for the tractor from the nose all the way back to the rear axle to hold it. It looks as if he used over 1000 pounds of steel plate to make it.

Also, what is the Multi-Power option. It has a three speed transmission and a 2-speed transaxle with shift levers mounted on the transmission but then a Multi-Power switch on the dash with high and low. Is this basically a hydraulicly shifted third transmission? It doesn't seem to make much difference but then I haven't had much opportunity to test it.

The tractor has several leaks that have to be taken care of and the brakes don't work well (probably worn out from all the extra weight). It will be some time before I am able to really test it but it does run well.

If you ordered the owners manual then it will fully explain the MP option. 2 column of explanation is too much to re-type here...

But in a nut shell M-Power is a "Shift on the Fly option with out use of clutch. cang give engine braking, helps on hills, can run in high or low all the time if you wish. Just always shift all the way up or down. Doubles your speed ranges.

i.e. 3 fwd + 1 reverse * high/low lever * high/Low M-P = 3*2*2= 12 fwd and 1*2*2 = 4 reverse.

One thing to be sure to do is check the oil level in the wheel planatary gears (blubus area on rear axel). These were often neglected and are expensive to fix. Yours should have a drain plug on bottom and fill plug on top. Uses 1 US quart of SAE 90 mineral oil.

Paul.
You wont find a Standard diesel engine in a MF 65 - they were never fitted to the 65 and were discontinued in the MF 35 range at tractor number 166595. Two types of Perkins diesel engine were fitted to the 65, the A4-192 which is the earlier ,indirect injection engine, and was fitted upto tractor no 531452 on the 65 Mk1. The later engine, the AD4-203 was fitted to the Mk2, from Nov 1960. Your tractor is a Mk2, and the D in the serial number I think, stands for direct injection
