I was told by some old timer Massey Harris fanatic friends of mine that you were able to repower your 44 with a 55 382 engine? They said that there is an extra bolt hole on frame behind the guide pin where bell housing bolts, where you can bolt the 55 bell housing to the 44 frame. Has anyone ever heard of this theory? The 55 shaft is chain driven and the 44 has a rubberized friction drive disc, how would these work? Thanks Craig

yes it can work.. but the mh 44 gas tank, grille, hood, they are much shorter than mh 55. frame tub is exactly the same for 33, 44, and 55.. but radiators is different..you could drop 55 engine in 44 but the hood wont be able to mount on it, 55 engine would be much taller than 44 but it should go right into it easy..shaft is same.. mostly 44 had chain on sprockets.. i think drive shafts on bell housing on 44 and 55 might be same...

not all 44 had rubber drives only the latter ones most had chain . as to engine change it might work because they do have to holes in the frame front and rear but i have never seen the swap but i think it can be done

You can get the 382 engine into a 44 row crop tractor, but the retro on detail is odd. The
steering shaft requires an added set of flex
knuckles, to get past the bell housing. The
entire dash, fuel tank, hood, radiator & support
need to raise about 3 inches, to remain level.
The 55 radiator is taller, thus you open a
Pandora's Box of abnormal choices. A 44, with a 260/277 engine, is a classic tractor, save it.
