A friend of mine bought a tractor that he says is called a "Henry Ferguson". he says it looks like a 8N ford. it is a gas tractor. Any idea how to tell what model or year this thing is?

Hi there,

Henry (Harry) George Ferguson born 4th. Nov. 1884, died in october 1960.

So the name Henry actually has something to do with Harry Ferguson. He was called Harry, and I have no idea why the name Henry is on the tractor. From what I read he is known for using the name Harry Ferguson, and not Henry. But as earlier mentioned, his name was Henry.

All TE / TO tractors, (Tractor England and Tractor Overseas) looks a bit like the Ford Fergusons built from 1939, the 9N and 2N

As far as I understand the TE and TO models has a flip up bonnet, and the Ford Ferguson is without that thing. Engine is on TE / TO models an overhead valve design, and the Ford Ferguson has a L-head design.

Below the steering wheel you shall find a plate, with the serial number. On this plate you shall also find the name Harry Ferguson Ltd if a TE tractor. Can it be that the name is lousy to read after so many years that it looks like Henry, and not Harry ?

Sounds like he has a TO-20. Looks very similar to a 9N/8N Ford. Get the serial no. and post it and someone will tell you the year.

I've never heard of "Henry" Ferguson. Only Harry... Last night at the local library I scanned a book on Ford tractors that had a couple chapters on early Ferguson and Massey-Harris-Ferguson tractors. The first Fergusons after Henry Ford and Harry Furguson split (actually it was Henry II that broke up the handshake agreement) were made of many of the same parts from the same suppliers as Ford tractors so they DID have much the same appearance. You need to find part and model tags on the engine, transmission and final drive. There should be a tag that identifies the tractor. Probably will have a TE or TO for old Furguson, 9N, 2N, or 8N for older Fords, NAA for the next generation Fords, MF for the next generations of MF tractors. Then ford went to numbers beginning with the 600 and 800 families before going to to the 3000 family with different looking sheet metal. Finding an engine tag with maker and model will be nearly the most effective identifier though the tractor tag should be distinctive too.
