Alternator wires on a MF 202

A friend of mine has a MF 202 (think that's what they said) that always has the battery running down. I glanced at the alternator the other day and it only had one wire leaving at the output lug... no other wires. Can the alternator function properly without the "sense" line and the "exciter field tap" wire connected? (Had no idea of the proper names until just a few minutes ago) Just wondering. Sure would appreciate any help.

Some alternators do just have one wire. They connect the sense line internally to the output and hope there won't be significant voltage drop on the charging wire.
I don't know what they do about exciting the field though. Good question.

Jim, Thanks for your response. I may have not made it clear enough before. The alternator had the two prong male plug but no there were no wires that I could see that would/could plug to them. Maybe some companies alter alternators so these two connections are no longer needed? As usual I don't know much of anything about such things.
