I am repainting the gray on my 1974 MF 135D. Which gray/silver is the right one?

John,

I used to work at a Massey dealer in the mid eighties. I don't know about the aftermarket stuff, but the OEM Massey gray paint (don't remember the number) would cover anything. When we painted tractors, we cleaned it with a hot water pressure washer and sprayed it, no questions asked. No scraping, no priming, take no prisoners kind of thing. Don't know if the paint now is the same but that stuff worked great. The other color is also called a gray or silver argent by the automotive people but I don't recall it being used on the 100 series tractors. Its a lighter gray than the metallic, dark gray used on the main part of the tractor. We used a brighter silver on the wheel rims to sort of dress the tractor up a bit.

There are two shades of gray: dark which is Flint Metallic Gray and lighter which is Silver Mist.

Flint metallic gray to be used on belly, i.e. engine, tranny, rear end, radius rods, and center members, axle extension, drag links.

Silver Mist to be used on grill front (black and Mist stripes), wheels (front and rear) and cowling under and around radiator.

Silver Mist also used on the front wheel nuts. The spindle cover on the front wheels appear to be Flint Metallic.

This is the way my 74 Diesel is painted. You may want to look to the left under Tractor Photos. There are some differences amoung some people and some year models. I will suggest you buy the paint from a Massey dealer, as the MF paint will cover very well and is worth the extra money. Good luck.
