I have a MF 1080 which has a "bad engine". Specificlly, it is known that it has a "spun" bearing on #1 and needs a reground crankshaft, main and rod bearings, probably piston rings and possibly sleeves and pistons although this is not a certainty. There will also be a few minor other engine parts needed, The engine, as yet, is still in the tractor.

I can also, purchase for $2000,(plus exchange) a good running (claimed) combine engine from a MF 540. I have, of course, already the correct oil pan and manifold.

Should I attempt major engine repair myself, or go with the already running combine engine?

You can go either way. Going to a combine engine you may have to change the injection pump and the water pump. If you go with the used combine engine I would recommend you keep the tractor engine until the switch is complete if you have to give them yours as a core. Good luck.
