Usually starts like a charm. But yesterday it did not. When I turn ignition key, the ammeter does not register a change. When I press starter button there is no noise whatever - not from solenoid nor from starter - & again the ammeter does not register. I replaced the solenoid & re-charged the battery. I have 12V at solenoid input post & ignition switch input post. When I switch ignition on, I get 12V at starter button input. When I press starter button, 12V arrives at side post on solenoid. My electrical tester shows no path between positive & negative locations, so I assume I do not have a short circuit. Please & thanks for your help.

I had a similar problem the other day. Searched the archives, and selected the simplest fix that I could find, suggested by Sibby in Australia. He said to take a 3-5 pound chunk of wood and whack the starter just below the solenoid. I had a rubber mallet handy and used that. It worked! The armature / brush must have been stuck. It's definitely worth a try.

Thanks Barry. I was sure ready to whack it by the time I found the problem. Turns out battery was putting out low voltage - enough to power the lights but not the starter. I discovered this when I removed the starter & connected it to my car battery. Worked fine, as it did when connected to garden tractor battery.
