I have a Massey Ferguson 124 baler that has broken the pick-up drive chain 2 times, there is a slip clutch on the pick-up shaft that apparently is not working properly. The slip clutch is bolted down as tight as the springs will go. There is nothing in my manual about the adjustments on it. If I take it apart and clean it and put it back together how tight should I torque the bolts. I know that I could do this by trial and error, but I would rather get it right before I get back in the hay field this fall. Thanks for any help you may have.

The pickup slip clutch was an accessory on the l24
baler(it should of course be in the manual)but it
would have had it's own sheet of paper. besides
loosening it by trial and error I would make sure
that its not rusted tight-loosen way up and let it
slip a little. Also check your manual under pickup
floatation adj. adding more spring floatation will
lighten and make it easier to clear an obstruction
Good luck.

Thanks Chuck,
I will double check the manual for info on the slip clutch. I have not adjusted the floatation, but I will check it.

Most of the clutches I have seen are correctly set when there are about 3 or 4 threads sticking out of the end of the nut. That means that the springs are not compressed at all.

A test would be a couple of 24" stilson wrenches on both shafts. If you can make the clutch slip by hand, it ought to be good enough to at least get started. Then if it slips just pick up a turn or two on the nuts at a time till it quits.
