Question: can multi-power be disabled so that the tractor only runs in high or are you stuck with it?

Hey Arthur, The 168 has got wet brakes, unless the rear axles have been changed, or maybe yours is an early 165. cheers mate.

Hi Sibby

Your right! it's a 165 early model with out any badges. Did have a 178 a few years ago with dry brakes they would work for about 500 hours then glaze up with the very fine dry dust around here. traded that on a 194-4, the designers of that tractor must have sat down and had lunch with the Fiat Blokes!

I agree with Charles. Mine may quit tomorrow, but after 29 years, it has certainly worked well for a long time. Very handy at times. Good luck.

The last post did not tell what you have to do to to do what he suggests. That is a major tear down! I had a Massey 180 that had the multi-power and I still miss it. It was the best hay cutting and baling tractor I ever owned. The multi-power was the best thing they ever put on a tractor.Learn how to use it and leave it alone!

Hi there Charles
You are very right about the amount of work involved and if the multi power is working the tractor is much more useful!
My 168 has the multi power not working and I have had a slow time fixing it. Someone had a go at repairing the dry brakes in the past and used silicon sealant instead of the correct gaskets when rebuilding the Tractor, this ended up in choking all the filters, which wouldn't be that bad except they also managed to switch the hoses over which run forward to the outboard transmission oil filter and oil cooler, the relief valve in the oil filter housing didn't work in reverse! so the oil locked and screwed the spline out of the auxilary pump ($850Aus to replace this pump). I am going to explore the possibility of welding the spline together using a stainless steel rod, but I also am prepaired to buy a brand new pump if the repair doesnt work. Cheers Arthur

Hello Dannz
To answer your question quickly is yes,
to lock it in High, the clutch pack must be bolted together.
To lock it in low, remove the clutch pack and place a ring or spacer preventing the overrun ratchet from sliding apart thus the tractor has then got engine braking and you call pull it to start it! By the way for using a rotary hoe in tough going the standard 6 speed and 8 speed transmission tractor are slower and do a better job than the multipower version, as the hoe tends to push the tractor along in low multipower, placing into high multipower to hold the tractor back is a little bit too fast.
Cheers Arthur

Thanks Arthur and others.

Have just bought an MF188 6 speed with multi power. It seems to be stuck in High so I will leave it there.

A guy around the road is an MF expert so I will see him.

I am in New Zealand and looking through this site reminds me what a tiny country we are, especially when I read some of the distances you guys travel just to get to town!!!

My 188 has the Perkins diesel A4 etc. Great motor.

The 188 looks similar to your North American except that the headlights are in the grill and the park lights are on the mudguards.

Cheers, Danz
