Hey,

We have a small Massey Ferguson diesel tractor that we have to jump off in order to get it running. We have had the alternator rebuilt thinking it was bad and was pulling the battery down. When we put the rebuilt alternator on, we still had to jump it off. We took the battery and had it tested. It was low on water, so the parts place added water and put it on a slow charge and said it was holding a charge. When we put the battery back in, the same thing is happening. What else could it be?

just because it holds charge that don't mean it's up to the amps you need to spin the tractor and might just be to small to start with. should be at least a 900 cca battery

sounds like someone has grounded a wire in the harness. how old is your tractor? i have an mf 35 that uses the oil pressure switch to keep load from draining the battery. in other words, the lights, fuel level gauge won't work unless the oil pressure switch is made up. if this switch is by-passed, then your fuel gauge and such would constantly remain hot. does your ammeter show neg current with tractor off? try lifting your battery pos lead off the post with tractor off and watch the ammeter.

Ok Mr. Randy how bout this.

Just bought a MF35D. Temp is a physical pressure reading. Oil pressure is a physical pressure reading. Ammeter is a current driven reading thru the alternator charge path.

The key has only one position and that is start which makes the starter turn and spring release to OFF I guess. Seems to be an OEM switch.

Where does the fuel gauge get it's power? Not currently working and I want to fix that.

I can see that if you have an idiot light driven off a switch, you could use the switch to turn on electrical goodies once the engine oil pressure closed the switch; but mine is analog.

Thanks,

Mark

Rick, have you inspected the battery cables and connections? Use one of the simple induction ammeters to check the current draw in the positive battery cable while cranking the starter. Old cables, loose connections, corroded and/or overheated wire, all or one will cause your problem. You can get by with using a 500 CCA battery in a gasoline unit but it requires a minimum of 750 CCA for a diesel engine, and as already posted, more is better!

You need to make sure that the battery is strong enough. Original spec is for two large six volts in series.
I find easystart helps as well
