I was trying to do a tuneup this week on the tractor I recently bought. The previous owner had no manuals. I ordered them today from the local MF dealer. Talk about sticker shock !!!! Roughly $110.00 for the 3 of them. It will be 1 to 2 weeks before I receive them. My neighbor suggested that since I had the gas tank removed while replacing the fuel shutoff and some other problems I ran in to, that it would be good to take a compression check. I have a 1970 3 cylinder Perkins gas AG3-152. Does anyone have access to the correct compression readings, I know the engine has some wear but maybe someone could give me a good estimation of what they should read. Any help would be appreciated.

Since you have ordered the manuals through your dealer, he will be glad to give you the compression figures, even on the phone. Might also tell you the testing procedures. Sometimes you test dry, then squirt in some oil and retest, etc. You did the right thing getting the real manuals; they will pay for themselves many time over if you keep the tractor and do your own maintenance. good luck.

Coyle,

I work at a Perkins engine distributor. If I don't forget about it, I'll see if I can find something for you tomorrow. I would think 90-100 psi would be about normal but I'll see what I can find. Do you have a problem with it or some reason to believe the compression is low?

Tommy

Hi Coyle and Tommy,
I would agree 90-100psi would be about right, perhaps a little higher in a very good engine. The main thing is that there is only a small variation across all the cylinders. Anything more than about 15 psi difference should be investigated.

Tommy Thanks for the help. I just bought the tractor a couple of weeks ago. It has less than 700 hours on it. It started to smoke and run rough. The carburtor is leaking. Sometimes I get white smoke from the exhaust, sometimes when I bump up the throttle I get black smoke. I guess I'm just trying to do a good tuneup to see if I can see any improvement. I have changed the plugs, points, condensor. I have removed the carburator to rebuild it. In the cleaning process I lost one of the jets. Had to drive 60 miles one way to the MF dealer. The jet I needed is not stocked so it had to be special ordered. While I was there today I ordered all three of the original MF manuals. The fuel strainer\shutoff knob is broken off so I thought I would remove the gas tank to make it easier to reinstall the strainer and fuel line. My neighbor suggested that I should go ahead and take the compression readings while everything is so accessible. Also gives me a better view to inspect for leaks, bad hoses etc.... I'm new to tractors so every little thing that doesn't work right seems like a major disaster. Ha Ha. My wife always said that I over react to everything. Ha Ha. I just want things to be right, especially if I know its broke or not working correctly. I guess that comes from spending 20 years in the Navy working around aircraft. Anyway...I've started to ramble instead of anwering your question. I would appreciate if you could come up with the compression readings, it would let me check it while I'm waiting for my carb jet to be mailed to me. Thanks again.

Coyle,

Been little under the weather last couple days and haven't had a chance to look for those specs but I will. Sounds like you mainly have a carb problem with the rich mixture. Get that fixed pretty soon; you don't won't to wash down the cylinder walls with gasoline. Good luck!
