Hi,
Just bought a MF 282 today. Yesterday, the dealer looked at the pto and said it was engaging when I put it in engine speed as I sat in the seat. Or so I thought. Got it home today, hooked it up to bushhog, PTO only grinds when I try to engage. Ground speed PTO will engage fine. Bummer, can't use my new tractor. Can someone give me advice on what to fix or why it won't engage?
Thanks,
Sean

THANKS!

After adjusting and re-adjusting all day to no avail, I decided to start it up with the PTO engaged and just mow a little while. I mowed about 20ft of tall grass and heard something make a noise. I thought that's either good or bad, so I pulled the PTO out, pushed the clutch all the way in and it went right back into PTO with barley any chatter. I guess a frozen disk or something popped loose. Thanks very much for all the advice.

Hi,
Your dealer sounds like an ****hole or he knows something you don't. Not sure about this model as it is not one available in the UK but may be equivalent to our 298 with an A4.318 engine. Assuming it's a two stage clutch, do you have about an inch of free pedal travel, then through the first stage and into the second about halfway down? As has been said, the adjustment is carried out through the hole where the belly plate is fitted. A gauge or feeler of about 2mm is usually satisfactory to give the correct clearance. First of all shine a light inside with the engine stopped. Ask an assistant to operate the pedal. You should see the front half of the clutch assy move rearwards. Press down fully and the movement will continue as the adjusters meet the PTO pressure plate. The movement in each case should be around 2mm. If it barely moves the adjustment is out and requires 2 1/2" AF spanners to make the 3 adjustments. Be careful...grazed knuckles time!!!
Other problems might be that the PTO plate is seized on its shaft, the plate is stuck to the flywheel plate or there may be oil on the linings.

Hope this is of some help.

DP

Call the dealer today and then take the tractor back right away. The dealer will probably make it right IF you don't delay, and IF you don't attempt the adjustments yourself. I realize it is a used tractor, probably without warranty, but since you just picked it up, the dealer will more than likely take care of you. Do not delay.

There is an Internal pto clutch adjustment made up through the hole in the bottom of the bell housing. Either it or the pedal free travel needs adjusting or maybe both. If you would like to have it I have a picture that shows how you make these adjustments I could email it to you.

Hi,

Thanks for teh pic it helped alot. Unfortunatley it still will grind and not go into PTO.

I adjust the release bearing fork shaft all the way to the right then backed it off a tiny bit. After adjusting th estop bolt a few times, i finally put it all the out with no clearance to see what would happen. It still wouldn't go into PTO, just grinds. Is there too much free play somewhere else?

thanks very much,
Sean

You could always shut the tractor off and engage the PTO then start it up and use the tractor. Also, stand on the clutch when trying to engage it. i.e. make sure you have the clutch all the way down.
