I am repairing my steering box, but can't remove the bottom thrust bearing race. I've tried using an axle bearing puller but it's too big to fit in the steering column opening. How can I remove the race from the blind hole in the bottom of the box? I'm ready to use a die grinder and grind it in two pieces for removal, but there must be a better way.

Ray I usually welded a bead around in the bearing cup this will loosen it to where you can flip it up & pull it out I used a magnet to pick it up out of the steering box I have also cut them out with a cutting torch a few times.

I got it out intact Big Dean. I rented a bearing puller made specificly for a blind hole. I didn't know such a tool was made until I inquired at AutoZone where they loan out tools at no cost. It is similar to an expanding mandrel, and as long as there is a small lip for the mandrel to catch the slide hammer will remove the race.
