Just bought a '65 FE-35 Diesel. Good shape for the age, and thinking of restoring it some day. Tractor starts and runs well, but does not stop. Linkage seems to work fine, but brakes barely work. Have pulled off the wheels to expose the drums, but don't have information on how to pull off drums to inspect shoes, etc. Any information would be much appreciated. Also, what is a good shop manual for this tractor?

They are a pig to get off because they sieze onto the half shafts. You'll see two countersunk head screws which need to be removed. Then good luck getting them off! I've tried heat without success, usually end up doing some damage to the outer edge when hitting with a hammer. If you have a suitable big puller that might do it? If it comes to it new drums are available, in the UK about 37 each here in UK. Have you tried adjusting the brakes? This does not require the drum to be removed, just go in through the inspection hole at the back with a screwdriver and keep clicking the adjuster round. If the brakes don't start to lock on turn the adjuster the other way - I can never remember which way to do them. Look for signs of oil leaking from the drum, in which case you have a half shaft seal gone. Writing this has made me wonder whether you can take off the half shaft complete with drum by undoing the ring of bolts at the back, and drop the whole lot into diesel untill it frees? Anyone tried this?
