My "power steering arm" broke on my tractor. It has been welded 3 times and continues to break. The break is opposite the tightening bolt. My question is what could be causing it to break??? I bought the tractor in February and have used it very little since then. The first person to weld it said the break was old. Anyway, I am interested in ideas that is causing it to break... Or is it possible that it "just broke"?? I have not been over any rough ground, have not bounced the front end, or run the tractor into a wall to knock something out of whack. I have decided to get a new one if I can find it, but I am concerned that maybe it will break also. Anyone have any ideas what might have caused this??

My guess is that the original break was caused by misuse. The weld and all subsequent welds are not holding because of the cast material that you are trying to weld. I feel that a new arm would outlast you and the tractor.

There was a problem with those breaking & that part was replaced with a better one you might check with your Massey dealer to see if you have the replacement part or the original one. We had a service bulletin telling us about the change.

mark, it probably broke originally due to some excessive force or knock, hard to say but which one are you talking about. the one under the front that is connected to the drag link.? it is cast and would have to be veed out and heated properly before welding, then cooled down slowly before being fitted, or else it will just keep breaking. cheers.

Thanks for the reply... No it isnt the one below, but instead the one on top next to the cylinder that fits over the spindle... It was veed out and welded properly according to all I know about it.. I am not a welder so I took it to someone else.. Anyway that iw what concerns me.. it was welded correctly and is still breaking.. I am conerned if I get a new one, it will break again and I still will not have the problem solved.. Thanks for the reply..

Mark, the veeing out is only part of the process. With cast material, the preheating and slow cooling is vitally important, otherwise the metal crystalizes at the weld and becomes very brittle. I have had good success welding cast using a nomacast rod, but again, pre heat to about 600 degrees (not yet red), and slow cool by burying the part in a box of sand. Good luck

Thnks for the comments. I called a parts man today and am going to get a new piece. He asked me if it had a loader on it.. I havent had one on, but the previous owner did. He seemed to think that might have been when the piece became cracked and eventually broke after I got it. I mentioned welding the piece and the service tech said he hasnt seen much success with welding that particular piece.. so I am hopeful this will work, Thanks again for the comments,

Mark
