I am an auctioneer who is going to be selling a l970's Massey Ferguson tractor model 135 in June. This tractor was purchased used in the early l990's and was last run last summer (2003). The owner is now in the nursing home and I can't get any information from him about the tractor. The tractor has been parked in an open sided covered shed. Aside from the fact that it was last run about a year ago, the front tires are low and the battery cable has been sliced in two, I don't know where to find the serial number, the tractor is presently connected to a brush hog type mower and the gear shift will not shift up or down into a forward or reverse gear. The shift lever will slide back and forth in neutral easily. I thought that maybe being connected to the mower was putting the gear box into a bind holding up my shifting it. Someone told me that maybe the Power Take Off level needs to be moved but I don't know which of the many levers it is. What suggestions would you have for starting it, getting it to shift into a gear (frozen lever) and/or finding the PTO lever?

If the tractor isn't runnning when you are playing around with the shifters, that's not a surprise. You have to get it running and play with the clutch a little to get the gears lined up right. If it's diesel, just push in the fuel shut off and turn the key with a good battery, should fire up. If it's a gas, you may need to choke it a little bit. A year isn't the longest one has ever sat before being started again, but just a general check of fluid levels and ign. condition would be helpful.

If you don't like what you see here, drop me an e-mail. I may have a lead on a gas 3cyl with 1100 hours on it with a loader and some implements.

Dave, I dont think the p.t.o. will have anything to do with main gearshift problem. The p.t.o. lever is located on the L.H. side plate of the diff housing, if you sit on the seat look down on your l.h. side plate behind your foot, the lever has to be in the mid position of three positions to be in neutral on a mechanical 540/ground speed p.t.o. If its independant (i.p.t.o.) it requires the engine to be running to activate it, so it has to be in the back position to be off. the gearshift problem is a new one on me, i have unstuck many by undoing the gearbox filler plug located on the l.h. side of the main gearbox selector stick and unfreeing by using a lever to move the shift rail, but i cant remember the stick having so much side play as if in neutral, perhaps the pivot pin on the gearstick has a lot of wear allowing the stick to move around so much. The serial number should be on a plate located on your dash. good luck, sibby.
