Patrick,

If you have the 3 cylinder diesel (3.152 Perkins) which I'm sure you do, the operating temp or thermostat should be in the 165 to 180 range. You probably need to replace the thermostat. There is a common misconception that cooler is better but it is not. The engine (or most any engine) is designed to run at a certain temp. On these particular engines, temperature is critical to maintain uniform heat in the cylinder head and block. If it has hot or cool spots, they are prone to blowing head gaskets between cylinders. The thermostat is located in a housing on the top front of the cylinder head just below where the upper water hose connects to the engine. Make sure you have a mix of antifreeze and water not to exceed a 50/50 mixture. Too much antifreeze can cause piston scuffing and isolated hotspots in the engine as well. I hope this helps; good luck!

wow sounds like the fuel tank needs to come off then. yes it is the 3cylinder diesel. so the tractor should have come up to temp ideling? right. i guessing a MF dearler is the only place to get a new thermostate and gasket?

Patrick,

Yes the fuel tank has to come off or be raised enough in the front to get the housing off. I have done it that way on service calls but be careful with the fuel supply line at the bottom of the tank and the fuel return line in the rear of the tank. ITs best to unhook them if you don't have a good way to lift the tank off or no help.

If you can get the thermostat out take it with you to a NAPA store and they probably have a listing for it; its not really special.

Tommy
