I'm not much up on MF tractors but I am looking at buying a MF 90, it has a Perkins diesel, runs and sounds real good, everything seems to be perty good on the tractor. What I want to know is, is it a Super 90? I didnt see any place on it where it said Super.
Any weaknesses with this model that I should be aware of before buying it? Are parts still readily avalable for it? Thank You in advance!

T,

I don't have any experience to share with you on the tractor itself, but I work for a Perkins engine distributor and consider them a very good powerplant. With a little TLC, they will last a lifetime. If you know the engine model and type, I might can find a little more info for you.

BTW, Caterpillar now owns Perkins. We have done a good bit of work at the Clayton and Sanford NC Cat plants. I think they bought Perkins in 1998.

Tommy

The hydraulics are nightmare when they mess up,a hodgepodge of Rube Goldberg linkages inside. The engine, trans and pto are good, but the 3pt leaves alot to be desired.

I understand that MF bought out Perkins to have a ready supply of engines for it's tractors. Perkins is a very reliable energy efficient engine, been around a long time and is used in a variety of equipment including marine engines and trucks (Lorries??).

MF is the largest (was) in the world. Had to be for some reason; maybe price and reliability.

I just bought a MF35 built in '64. Hasn't had a wrench on it. Put it along side my Fords and it is obvious that Mr Ferguson (the engineer) was serious about quality and functionality. Example my "Standard" model comes with Perkins 3/152 Diesel, dual range 6 speed transmission, 2 stage clutch with Live PTO and has ground PTO; very solid hydraulics with separate position and draft controls, with limit stops very easy to set and positive. My comparable Fords of the same year have Ford 4 cyl Diesel, 4 speed tranny and transmission driven PTO with single stage clutch.

Now as all that applies to the 90 I have no idea but I'd bet some of it applies.

The more I think about it, I am just now wondering why my LOGO is "txblu". Maybe I should sell my blue and buy some more gray (and red). Then change my LOGO to "txgra". Seems Fergie developed a superior product.

I agree with you completley.

The Perkins power plant is what turns a MF from being better than Ford, to being far, far, far superior to Ford.

Just my opinion.
