I have heard this knocking sound once in a while in the transmision? Just a couple of knocks not real loud. I was not using the pump either just rolling along. Today I heard it again but when I was backing up to push a little bush out of the ground it jamed in reverse and would stall the tractor when I tried to let the clutch out? The shifter was real hard to push out of gear. I did get it out and it seemed to work fine but this realy bothers me! What may be going on inside the transmision? I was not jaming gears just put it in reverse let out the clutch it started to move then it locked up tight! It shifts fine now?? Any ideas? Thanks, Mark H.

Pretty much everything has been said. Have actually freed a MF 250 stuck in gear today. All you need is about 18" of 1/2" rod bent to reach into the oil filler hole to prise the selector back. Worth checking if the gear lever retaining pin is badly worn and the cross-hole on the lever ball has gone oval. A new pin 180 581 M1 will help.

I am going to pull the Shifter and take a look. I don't use the tractor as much now but this winter it gets a work out. It would be a wrong time to have to fix it then!! Mark H.

The ball and socket in the transmission cover will get worn and cause this problem on almost all the small/medium Masseys. You can repair it but if you will get in the habit of holding down slightly on the shifter when you go to reverse, it won't usually do it. Most people (including me) tend to lift the shifter when shifting to reverse. If you ever have problem getting it unstuck, LOCK THE BRAKES FIRST, take the hyd/trans fill plug out and use a bar to push the reverse shift rail back where the end of the shifter can go back in it. You might have to push the clutch down to release the gear pressure but make absolutely certain the tractor cannot roll when it comes out!!!!! ! Used to work at Massey dealer and I made about 20,000 service calls I think to unstick them

When to Big Deans Site and read these Masseys will do this once in a while when they get a lot of hours on them. That knocking sound must have been the sound of it tring to lock up in 2 gears at once. I better be real carefull on how I shift it and make sure it is in gear good first. Thanks Big Dean for your great site and glad to hear your feeling better. This old 135 has sure gave me a lot of hours of no problems till just now! It has 9,660+ hours on it with out a tear down. Mark H.

Hi Mark Did your wheels lock up when this happened it could be a tooth broke off the reverse idler gear that happens now & then it will make a knocking sound if it has a tooth broke off & if it gets wedged in the gear teeth it will lock up the transmission. Email me if I can help.

Dean; I am not sure? It just would not go anywhere when I let out the clutch just like it was in two gears at once. After I pulled it out of reverse it seemed OK. I might just pull the shfter and take a look inside to make sure the gears are OK and none are chipped. Thanks, Mark H.
