My MF 65 was running a little rough the other day so I put on a new distrib cap, rotor and plugs. The engine starts and idles OK. When a load is put on the engine starts to backfire and will not pull a load without lots of loud backfiring and missing. I have advanced and retarded the timing and it doesn't help. I have changed out the dist cap, rotor, plugs, gapped the points and filed them and it doesn't help. My buddy thinks the coil or condensor might be "weak". When the dist cap is off and the engine is turned over the spark across the points is pretty puny. The governor is working OK. Help. All ideas appreciated.

You might try cutting a little off the ends of the coil wire and putting new ends on. Ours had a weak spark and it fixed it.

Check the tower on your coil for a crack. You said you replaced the cap,I'm assuming with a new one,A crack in the cap would also cause your symptoms

The firing order for the G176 Continental engine is 1-3-4-2 the distributor shaft rotation is counterclockwise. If you have it wire clockwise then you have 3 & 4 plugs firing a half a round off. it is very easy to do this & the tractor will run pretty well till you put a load on the engine
