I have restored an MF 65MK II ( Coventry built) with factory power steering. The power steering was the best thing on the tractor when I started- really feather light. The pump came off when the motor was rebuilt and seemed pretty straightforward to replace. The front end was completely reconditioned and the whole was reassembled. I replaced the filter in the reservoir and used new oil. Now there is nothing. Not even any turbulence in the reservoir when the tractor is running. There is no output from the small bypass hose for excess oil. I can only think of a pump that isnt turning because of a sheared key or something. I have tried releasing the oil hose at the ram to get rid of air. Still nothing. Any suggestions?

have you tried to adjust the turnbuckle behind the grille. it may have been messed with in the rebuild.it's very sensitive and takes some skill to adjust and get it right.

Hi, happy 2006 to all,
I am having trouble with my turnbuckle; my steering was turning left ok. but impossible to turn right when not moving, after playing around with it, now turns right but not left. Would replacing (if available) the turnbuckle fix the problem, or....
thanks in advance

Rick, My local Massey dealer has the 165 203 pump mounted to L.H. side of engine available for $880+G.S.T., twice the price of the more common R.H. side mounted unit, it is only available through BARECO which is non genuine. He said there is not much demand for the early model pump and they are just charging what they like. There is a bit of pipe and plumbing work to be done to fit new pump as it incorporates its own reservior for the P>S. oil. All the old hoses and reservior are no longer needed with new pump. Hope this helps, keep us posted. regards, sibby.

Rick

I have several Nos pumps and pump parts for the MF 65, but there were several different ones used depending on serial # and engine type.

Rick, It sounds like you could have a sheared key or a snapped shaft maybe. From memory they have a roll pin to secure the gears to the drive shaft, they work their way out with age and use, and chew into the teeth of the gears and wreck them, or the pump locks up and shears the key on drive gear. I am not sure if parts are still available for the 65, they were a small cast iron pump, the later model 165 with 203 cu. in. Perkins diesel had the larger alloy pump which i have fitted to 65 fergies in the past, but from memory had to do a bit of grinding on the housing to fit, long time ago ,cant quite remember Chris. Remove yours, try to turn it by hand, it should have some resistance, it could be locked up, or it may spin easily to suggest that it may have sheared the key or snapped shaft internally. If you have to replace it, only the pump off the 165 with the 203 cu. in. will fit as they are bolted to the engine on the L. H. side of the engine, the 212,236,248. cu. in. are bolted to the R.H. side of engine EG,Later model M.F. 165, 175, 178,168, 185, 188. Chris, let us know how you get on, where abouts do you live? regards, sibby.

Sibby, Ray and Tom
Thanks for the help. I took the pump off and - its fine. Twist the gear and oil spurts out. No problems. I think my problem may be in the hoses on the ram which could have been put back on reversed. I just havent had time to try switching them around. Everything else including hoses, filter etc is Ok so that is about all it can be.
