Had starter problems last mowing season. Took the starter off, cleaned it up real good and put it back together. Finished the season in pretty good shape. Draggin again now. Wouldn't start the tractor when it was warm, won't start the tractor at all now. Concidering remanufactured ? Thought about taking it to a starter/generator shop but don't want to be disapointed in a year or so. Concidering converting to 12v system, original 6v positive ground now. Pull started with pickup to get it back in the barn, thought about jumping it off 12 volt pickup? Any thoughts or anything else. Any and all thoughts please! Thanks, Dan

Spark

I've converted a lot of tractors from 6 to 12V. Ther are several ways. It depends if you want to run your existing 6 volt starter or not. I usually left the 6 volt starter. A good 6 volt starter will run for years on 12 volts if you don't grind all day and will really spin your engine. Change the battery cable ends so battery is 12V neg. ground. Then you will need to reverse the wires on the back side of the amp guage (all the wires on the - side to + side and vice verse) to make it read correctly. The wires on the ignition coil need to be reversed the same way. Replace the coil with a 12 volt (Nappa IC14) or install a ballast resistor between the coil and the ignition switch (Nappa ICR 150). There were two different generators on the Mustang one with a cutout (2 wires) and one with a regulator. If you have the one with a cutout you can replace the cutout with a 12 volt cutout, it will produce about 14 Volts from the 6 volt generator configured this way. Your other options are to find a 12 Volt generator/regulator or convert it to an alternator. A GM 10SI with a built in regultor works good for most applications. Installing an alternator is fairly easy once you've converted to 12 Volt negative ground. Change any light bulbs!

Thanks Tom, I didn't realize I could still use the 6v generator. Valuable information and I appreciate it. One reason I was against changing. I have put new gauges in the last couple of years and also a new 6v coil (went to change the wires and the post broke out) I'm rambling but I do appreciate the post and will save in My Massey
notebook. Thanks again, Dan

Spark,
When you buy a reman you usually don't get anything more than what the local shop does. The big difference is usually price, and quality. There are alot of junk remans being sold, that aren't worth a hoot. Granted they're warranted but usually so are the local shops. the local guy will usually replace questionable parts where as alot of the reman companies will let them slip through, because they don't have to listen to the upset customer when it goes bad.
If your worried about the price, ask the local guy to tear it down and give you an estimate before he fixes it.
hope this helps, jstpa

Had hoped for more response on converting this system over to 12v. I'm sure there has been plenty of discussion on the forum and remember reading some in the past. Got a good offer for a remanufactured, they'll ship and pay to have the core (exchange) shipped back. Reputable company has sent me a catalog the last couple of years. Don't get on here much throughout the winter but always find my way back during mowing season. Grateful for this web site. Spent a lot of time reading through the stories and enjoyed most every one of them. Wife might think it was time wasted but what a way to waste it. Thanks, Dan
PS Hey John F. you ever get your Mustang clutch woes straightened out. Drop me a line if you catch this. Lost your address.
