My 230 started running rough this spring so I pulled the plugs. They were kind of white so I took them to a local guy and with one look he said your points are off. Pulled the cap and rotor and set the timing mark to 8deg BTDC per the book. Looked like to me the plastic follower on the points was slightly off of the center of the cam lobe. I don't remember which side of the lobe is was off to. I set the gap to.022 and ran the tractor. It was as rough as before or worse. I turned the distributor until it smoothed out some but its still not right. I can borrow a timing light and dwell meter from Autozone. How would you fellows go about setting the points and timing. My book is kind of vague and I'm kind of stupid. Makes for a frustrating combination. Thanks for any help.

Quality and amount of fuel can have the similar effects.

Take a look at your timing mark location and verify that Top Dead Center is truly Top Dead Center. Pull out the spark plug on number one cylinder and place a long screwdriver down the hole and slowly the engine over- When the screwdriver stops upward motion your timing mark should be within a few degrees of TDC (if not, you need to correct it, or compensate for it.)

Also check that the firing order is correct and that it is done in relation to the rotation to the actual rotation of the distributor. Also check condition of plug wires, and if they look questionable at all- replace them. Check for cross firing between cylinders, or possible carbon tracks inside of distributor cap, or greasy dirt outside of distributor cap. Also check condition of all wires, including the wire tot he points themselves, as well as all ground connections, even inside the ditributor there is a flex wire from the advance plate to the body ofthe distributor- or there should be.

It is all basic stuff, but it is often overlooked.
