Is there a substitute out there for the MF Permatran III transmission fluid. My dealer lives over 100 miles away and I don't want to go there.-Thanks Keith

See the discussions on this board re: substitute oils. The most important thing is the GL rating on the fluid. Make sure the rating on the fluid you buy is the same as what is required. The additives in GL4 and GL5 can damage older trannys and pumps.

Check the specs on the generic universal tractor fluid found at TSC or Farm and Fleet,or NAPA,you may find it meets MF's specs for their oil.

there are many aftermarket hydraulic oil suppliers, even Wal-Mart, NAPA, TSC, etc. If you are working your tractor hard or really depend on it for your business, you might just want to make that trip and "Load Up". I have used the "other" oils and haven't had significant problems but others have had different experiences.

I buy generic oils from reputable dealers (including Wallyworld), keep equipment clean with filters changed regularly, and keep all tractors shedded. I buy the red NXXX-2 rated grease by the case and am not afraid to use it often and lots of it.

I use oils with my particular spec listed on the container including mineral oil (GL-1 90W).

In 40 years, have never had a piece of equipment fail due to an oil related condition. Believe it or not, I have yet to wearout an engine or drive line. Clean oil can't be beat.

Think about this: How much does 5 gallons of oil cost vs just one transmission gear, or one engine piston? No comparison.
