I've got a 1961 Massey Ferguson 135 with a three cylinder gas engine. How do I tell if the engine is a Perkins versus a Continental and where do I look for the engine serial number. Thanks, guys!

We just purchased an old Massey Ferguson 135, diesel engine.
The belt keeps slipping off between the fan and the alternator. The alternator is mounted funny,at an angle, or slight tilt maybe and pulls the belt crooked when the belt is put back on.
I'm sure this is why the belt jumps off, but how do we fix it??
Thanks

Carla, sounds like the mounting bracket is bent or the mounting bolts worn or too small for the holes in the bracket maybe. did it have an alternator fitted from new?, or did someone maybe replace a generator with another bracket which is misaligned.? regards sibby.

on the alternator side, behind the alternator, up under the side sheet metal, it will say "AG-152"

they put a different cylinder head on the Perkins "AD-152" plus a carb and made your tractor

great tractor and please take good care of it

If you have a 135 MF it is not a l961. 135 models
started out with a 4 cyl continental gas or a 3
cyl diesel. In l969 MF switched to a 3 cyl Perkins
gas. If you have a 3 cyl gas it is a l969 or newer.

Chuck -- Thanks for the info. I'm guessing the previous owner said it was a '71 ( not '61 ). Also think I messed up trying to replace the oil filter cartridge by telling the guy at the local MF dealer that it was a Continental. When I started the tractor with the new filter cartridge, the oil pressure gauge maxed out. I shut off the engine and haven't tried to re-start it until I could get some better information about the engine in this model. Guess I'll go back to the dealer and try again! Thanks for your help. If ya got a 3 pot petro engine in ya 135, ya can be sure its from Perkins. Continentals were all 4 pots.

Up until '69 you would be right, then perkins gas engines were used instead of the cont.
