Hi all,
I've never posted in here before, but I've been in "lurk" mode for several weeks. I've spent a lot of hours reading the archives as well. I have a few questions about a MF tractor I want to buy. Here's a link to some photos of it:

Thanks to Gary and all who replied. I bought the tractor Friday. I'm thrilled to death so far, although it has a few issues I'm working out. Thanks a lot!

Dave..Next time you look at the tractor (if you haven't bought it already)check the dash to see if there were any small holes on the sides where the medallions might have been. I don't think they had them on the 20's but they did on the 2135.

Gary,
It has a discolored square spot, maybe 3 inches by 2 inches with four empty screw holes in the corners where the plate was. In the photo labelled MFDashShifters.jpg you can clearly see the place I'm talking about. Whatcha think? Also, do you know if the GL-1 oil works for the shuttle trans?
Thanks!

Dave...the medallions were on the sides however the holes and the raised locations for them were on both tractors but...only the 2135 and 135 had them! I believe the location for the ID tag was the same for all. The best place for the info on the lube would have be the dealer. Buy it there the first time then start looking for an other less expensive supplier. I can ask later today. Do you own it yet?

Gary,
I also wanted to ask if you or anyone knows what the parts availability is for the shuttle shift trans? Also, how much reliable is it, and how much harder to work on?
Thanks!

Gary,
I don't own it yet, but I hope to by the weekend. I want to replace the fluid and try the 3 pt. lift before buying because it has a good bit of water in it and will only lift the massive box blade on it a few inches. Of course, a friend of mine thinks I'm a dummy for not having it at my house already and says to buy it regardless, and fix the hydraulics if necessary. I found the GL-1 spec gear oil at Napa, but it took some effort. They told me they didn't have it, but my friend had 3 buckets of it from them, so I got their part number off the bucket, and they're supposed to have it ordered in for me this morning. The nearest Massey dealer is 40 minutes away.

It seems to be a great deal for such a heavy duty tractor, so I'm very excited. It's my first tractor. I know it'll take a lot of work, since it's so old with high hours, but that's part of the fun.

Dave...I agree with your buddy. If all it needs mechanically is a rebuilt pump you will not go wrong. I was told to use good old TDH oil that meets the MF spec. if it has had water in it for that long you are not going to hurt it by running heavyer 80w90 in it we are not talking about a new tractor here, nor should it be that unforgiving. The shuttle trans could become pricy to repair if necessary. Make sure you check out each gear forward and reverse hi and low range. This should also give some indication of the condition of the clutch.

I have a MasseyHarris 333. I am in the process of restoring this tractor and have noted that the oil filter has been disconected. The lines from the engine have been disconnected and the intake and exit lines pluged at engine. I have been wondering why this was done in the first place.
I do not want to hurt the engine, but do want to connect this back up.
Can anyone tell me why this may have been disconnected? The filter assembly seems to be intact, and in good shape.
Thanks for any imput
Darrell

Dave

It could be a 20 or it could be a 2135. Very hard to tell the difference. The MF logo on the front of the grill is about the only way I can tell. In either case it is not a Turf model because of the manual shuttle and the solid front axle. If it is a 2135 it is a "utility". If it is a 20 it is an "industrial".

Update: Sorry I hadn't checked the archives for oil type. I see a lot of controversy, but since I live in Florida and it's summer time here (as always), and the hydraulics are probably worn (8000+ hours) I think I'd better go with 80 90 w mineral oil instead of permatran 3. Sorry to ask another dumb question, but is that the stuff just labelled 80-90 gear oil? How about the friction additives? Thanks!

In re: to the oil - you want a GL-1 spec. You don't want EP additives. 80-90 weight is OK so is 80-140W but the weight is not the dispositive factor the GL-1 rating is. You do not want GL-4 or GL-5 or any other GL rating.

So GL-1 is what I need even though its the shuttle shift trans? I found some at Napa that's straight 90. Thanks!

Dave you had better snap that 20 up real quick! it does not appear to be a "turf special" I don't think they had solid front axles. I looks more like a loader or construction model because it has the shuttle trans and 24" tires.

Hey DaveG. What are you doing looking on here when your supposed to be working. Get hopping. You've got programming to do. Better yet, what are you doing looking on here when you could be over there getting your tractor. Talk about wasting time. Sheesh. If I was your boss..... ....
