MF 35, 1964 model.
Hope someone can help.
On turning ignition key the engine turns over and over but no ignition happens. small amounts of smoke puff from exhaust but no ignition takes place. Battery is fine. I have no idea where to start with this - any pointers or advice greatly appreciated.

Is it a diesel? If so, did it run out of fuel? If so you will need to bleed the air out of the fuel system. Other than that...I don't know.

Many thanks.
Yes it is diesel. It may well have run out of fuel - although it is not empty now - i will need to ask the person who borrowed the tractor when it died!!!
How would i go about draining the air from the fuel system.
thanks again.

Paul,
I have a picture, courtesy of Big Dean, that might help. I can also scan the pages out of my 1964 model 65 owner's manual that tell how to bleed the air out. Basically, like the other guys said...working from the fuel tank toward the injector pump, bleed the fuel filters, then the injector pump, using the lever on the transfer pump, and you should be good to go. This might work best with 2 people, since (at least on my 4 cylindar Perkins) the transfer pump is on the opposite side of the engine from where you loosen the bleeders. I did it single handedly out in the field, though...so it's not that difficult. If you need the graphic images leave me an e-mail address.
Thanks,
Barry

Hi Barry, I have a Massey Ferguson 65 diesel. I had to get a re-built injector pump. I don't have a book, and I was wondering if you could tell me how to time the injector pump. Thanks Milton Garrett

When you bleed the fuel lines start at the fuel tank and work your way forward thru the filters then the injector pump to the front nozzle through the 2nd and 3rd to the rear nozzle. BTW, check the fuel cutoff rod connection, it may have came loose or isn't in the RUN position.

you will have to use the fuel lift pump located on the right side of the tractor to pump fuel to the injector pump. there are two small bleed screws on the injector pump that have to be cracked open. my experience has taught me that i have to bleed the fuel lines at the injector nozzles also.
