I'm looking at a MF 135 with 680 hours on it. The owner says he's not sure but thinks the year is a 1967. The SN: A9 106551. He also refers to the engine as a Perkins 3 cyl gas engine. The SN: 3711500/2. Someone told me Perkins did not make a 3 cyl. gas engine. Being new to tractors,
I'm a little confused. I know Perkins made a 3 cly. diesel engine but not sure about the conflicting stories about the gas engine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Any other data such as engine specs (if it can be identified) or just general information about the basic tractor and engine. Pros\Cons etc....

I have a MF-135 with a perkins 3 cyl gas motor sitting in my orchard right now. She has been a good tractor. I use it for my orchard work. Its great for brush cutting around the apple trees and for spraying and rototiller work. Its not big enough for my farm work such as plowing or haying, but for orchard, vinyard or gardening work you can't beat them. I have plowed a few gardens with it using a 2-14 plow and she handled that alright.

if you can get your head in to see, theres an ID plate way up on the side of the engine just behind the alternator, side sheet metal hides it, 3 cyl perkins gas would say AG-152

my nephew showed me this same model tractor and I had the rare good sense to buy it - good for lighter to medium kinda stuff, get the 165 if you need more power

Be very careful accepting the "hours" shown on older tractors. Since the current owner does not even know the year of the tractor, that tells me he is not the original owner. A 1967 tractor showing only 680 hours would have only been used 18 hours per year - - I don't think so. Most auction places and other resellers turn the meter back as a routine thing.

Aslo, you dont know how many times its been round the clock.

Look at the wear on the tread on the clutch and breaks. That will give you a good idea of whether its truthful or not. unless its had the pedals replaaced during a restoration of course.

I have a 3 cylinder diesel 135. Very good tractor, tough, and pulls well for its size. I would recomend it, unless any one else knows of any problems with the gas engine? If i had the choice id go for a 3 cylinder diesel, but thats just me. i like diesel! But if its in a good condition, and the engine seems to run good, its fine. Dont worry about a little bit of initial clashing when you put it into gear (as long as its not too much!) All old MF's seem to do this until you get the hang of them, it never seems to do them any harm. Ben

I really appreciate all the tips and advice. None of the pedals have any wear. The original
owner bought it from a Church prior to them disbanding. It was used to mow grass. The new
owner has only used it to mow grass (about 2 acres). Has not really seen any hard use. I'm
hoping to get a lot more years of use from it.
Just need to get familiar with how everything
works. There are no owner\operator manuals with
it. I wished it at least had a service manual, but you can't have your cake and eat it too.
Ha Ha.....

Thanks again for your help.

Perkins did make three cylinder gas model at 152 ci.I think these were in the late model 135's for the most part. Mine is a 1975.
As far as I can tell the engine is very sturdy(converted from diesel) and has ample power. I like the 135 overall performance and toughness. It does use more gas than my IH 340 and at 36 hp is about the same size. The two speed tranny is nice.
There is lot of info on this site covering the 135.

Fred Thanks for the fast response. Could you tell by the SN: A9 106551 what year this tractor would have been mfg? You also talked about the Perkins 3 cyl gas engines being converted from Diesel engines. Could you expound a little bit
more on that for me. Like I said I'm pretty new
to tractors. It does have the 2 speed tranny, do you know if the 135's came with the 2 stage clutch? I wasn't for sure in your response when you talked about the HP if you were referring to your IH or the MF as being 36HP. Hope this doesn't sound like I'm nagging, I'm just in my
usual state of mind (confused). It all started down hill after I turned 50. HA HA !!!

According to tractortips.com you have a 1970. They only show the diesel HP. C. T.

I'm not very knowledgeable about 135's. Lot of people on this site are. I've only had mine 2 weeks.
Perkins made an outstanding 3 cyl. diesel at 152ci. That engine was converted to burn gas. Some say it doesn't have as much low rpm power as a 4 cyl engine. I haven't noticed that.
The 135's do have a two stage clutch with live pto. The first depress stage stops the tractor but the pto still operates. Fully depressing the clutch stops the pto as well.
You can check the serial numbers from the menu on the left to see what year your tractor was made.
The 135 with 3 cylinder gas engine has about 36 or 37 pto hp.
Hope this helps.

I used to work for a MF dealer and although the 100 series (135, 165, 175 etc.) tractors were superseded by the 200 series at that time, we had sold a lot of 135s with the diesel and both the Continental and Perkins gas engine. We actually converted a gas one to diesel by changing heads and pistons and adding the injection pump. We had a diesel that broke a crank so we had all the other parts needed. The only problem(?) we ever experienced with the Perkins gas engine was sometimes getting the ignition timing and points right. Sometimes they would stutter and misfire under load but not usually a big issue. The 135 was probably one of MF's best sellers; I remember my boss talking about selling 8 in one day!!!

Good luck with it; you'll have a good tractor with a little care.

Tommy
