I just purchased a MF 165/ gas. It is in good shape. My dad has a Hesston 5510 baler that I would like to use with it. The hesston book says the required HP is 55. My question is, can I run this baler if I make the bales smaller then fullsize? I think the baler will make approx 1000 lbs. I was hoping I could run it if I made the bales approx 800 lbs. Please email me at [email protected]
Thanks, Mark

I believe they are rated at 52 PTO HP the same as the 3 cylinder 4000 Ford, earlier 65 were rated at less. Years ago had a hay conditioner book called for 35 HP, didn't even have a tractor that big, used a 28 HP most of time with a 18 HP under lighter hay. You are so close to what it calls for unless you havs some adverse condition don't wory about it or changing settings

What engine does yours have? the continental gas is only rated for 42 hp(what I have) and the perkins engines are rated for (I think) 48 hp. The 165 may be a little light to handle the baler on hilly ground, but on flat land it may work. I stress MAY work I assume the 165 has aux. hydraulics? I know some came with and most without them I added some on this winter to run a loader.

It is the continental gas engine. The terrain is very flat and yes it has 2 sets of dual action hydraulics. I hooked the baler to make sure everything worked and it worked like a champ. When I engaged the PTO everything sounded smooth, but the real test will be in the field.. I may go ahead and try it. Thanks for the reply

Best Advise I can give you is take it slow and be careful, having that light of a tractor on a round baler. Ours is a continental gas and it seems like it has more hp than it's rated for. She sure does like to grunt when working hard.
