MF 165 PTO problem

I purchased a MF 165 diesel that needs a lot of cosmetic care and a new clutch. It has multi power and independent PTO. I hooked it to my 5' rotary mower that I normally use with my TO-20, to see how everything worked. When I enngaged the PTO, I immediately sheared the shear pin on the mower. The next time I feathered it in and mowed until the PTO popped out of gear. I guess that it needs some detent work. I put it in gear again and evidently didn't feather it enough as the shear pin again snapped and then there was a clunking noise inside of the tractor until the PTO stopped. Now the PTO will not work and also the lift does not work. I did not try the Multi power to see if it still worked, to narrow it down to see what part actually went out. Is there any kind of shear mechanism inside of the tractor, or is this big trouble? Has anyone hade a similar experience. Thanks for any input on this.

Thanks everyone for your ideas. Today I removed the lower inspection plate and all that I found was a little clutch dust. Everything that I could see looked ok. In a couple of weeks I will split the tractor as the drive clutch needs replacing anyway. I will see if I can see anything from there. If I don't see anything there I will have to go in deeper. I will update when I find the problem.

Hello from South Wales UK,
A possibility to consider is that one or both of the Ferguson pump dowel pins have sheared/broken. If this had happened the pump and aux pump would be allowed to turn and 'bang' inside the casing. It is possible to damage the feed pipe to the IPTO and loose pressure and also damage the stackpipe which goes to the two hole plate on top of the hydraulic cover, again causing loss of pressure. If the pump dowels have broken you will prbably find damage to the end plate of the pump.

Hope this helps

David (South Wales)

Crem, remove clutch inspection plate under front of gearbox, behind where it bolts to rear of engine. See if there are any sheared off rivets from your p.t.o. clutchplate, causing it not to drive from hub to clutch plate.regards, sibby.

Crem;

I don't think the multipower will work if your 3 pt doesn't work. The IPTO, aux(multipower)pump and the 3 pt all run off the same shaft from the engine. The main hydraulic pump and aux pump drive from right behind the transmission. The IPTO clutch pack is just behind the main hydraulic pump. You MUST engage the IPTO with the engine at idle and feather it.

I replaced the clutch pressure plate on mine (MF165) last year, the splines were worn alittle, also replaced the input shaft. Mine was making a backlash clanking noise. No matter what the tractor will have to be split at least once maybe twice.

This brings back so many bad memories, I almost didn't answer. I had a 165 with IPTO and a John Deere 34 forage harvester. Sometimes one shear pin would last quite awhile and other times it would take 3 shear pins to get the chopper stared once, even with the engine at an idle and trying to feather the pto. Your tractor has 2 shafts going into the trans., one inside the other. The outer shaft drives the pto and hydraulics. It is splined into a hub on the back of the clutch cover. My tractor was a 1968. The shaft and clutch cover were replaced in 1976 because the splines were so badly worn. By 1982, they were 2/3 gone again. I sold it 1983. It is posible that the cluncking you hear is these splines letting go.
