I have a service manual on order but need some assistance if possible.M/F 135, DGM 1011343 w/W 145 motor. The power steering was leaking from the top plate on the valve and the left cover assembly for the left steering arm. Removed all tin and removed the valve and found the seal that keeps the oil in the valve appeared to be pushed out from the inside. Installed rebuild kit and put it back in. Drove it for about an hour with no leaks, although the steering was hard and jerky on right turns. Tried it again today and it has the very same problem. Leaks in the same places. Pump reservoir was empty which could be a bad seal there. Filled the reservour again with the same results as before. I removed what I think is the relief valve (or pressure valve) that is below the pump, but can't see anything wrong there. How do you adjust or check the pump pressure? I'm thinking the pressure is way too high which might account for the blown seal. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tom/Idaho

Tom:
Talked with one of my mechanics about your problem. He says that when you put in your kit, you inadvertantly created a pressure build up by not retiming your metering valve. His suggestion is if you re kit it once again make sure you have a mechanic or hydraulic specialist retime the metering valve so it doesn't blow the seals again.

How do you re-time a metering valve and where is it? Only valve I can find in the system is what appears to be a pressure or relief valve in the pump. Local FNH parts guy says it's factory set at 1125 psi and is no longer available. On mine the screw was loose ( by loose I mean you could turn it in or out with a screw driver)and there does not appear to be any way to lock it in place. Thanks for your help. Tom/Idaho

that screw was a (setscrew) it shoud have had an expansion cap on top that need a small hole drilled to be able to pry off, the cap also kept screw in place seems they come by themself's. by the way this is your relief valve and it consits of expansion plug then set screw -spring-ball retainer-last the ball making your relief valve . The internal relief valve has been pre-set by the manufacturer to open at 1500psi and shoud not be disassembled unless a malfunction. But if took apart clean and assemble in revers when putting set screw in trun screw same number of times as when removed .didn't count!! Well fill to proper level trun steering wheel to left and rigth full travel recheck level- install pressure gauge, whith engine running check reading shoud be at 1500psi ;if not fine tune by turning set screw to obtain 1500psi afterward install new expansion plug shut engine remove gauge reconnect pressure line assembly to the pump pressure port check level one last time.
