TO-35 Engine Rebuild

Last fall I discovered a total lack of oil pressure on my MHF TO-35. I received several helpful replies here on this forum but I decided that the replacement of the oil pump was just a little more that I wanted to attempt myself.

I recently sent the tractor to be repaired and I have been told that a complete engine rebuild would be the best thing since there is some scoring on a main bearing. 'Might as well do the top end while we are at it'.

The last estimate that I heard was almost $3,000

The tractor still starts right up and does not make any strange noises.

Is this type of overhaul advisable?

I would like to keep using this tractor for years to come but I can't see putting new pistons, valve job, etc unless there is some evidence of damage or impending failure.

Thanks for reading all of this..

SP

If the oil pump shaft is broken it ran with out oil and did some damage .I just rebuilt my MF TO 35 134z ALL THE WAY , COST ABOUT $1,350.00 WITH NEW WATER PUMP ALSO I HAD TO BUY A BLOCK AT $625.00 AND SHIPING ABOUT $75.00 TOTAL OF $2,050.00 WITH OUT LABOR . IF YOUR BLOCK IS GOOD SUBTRACT COST . WITH YOUR BLOCK I WOULD SAY WITH LABOR SHOULD COST BETWEEN $2,000.00 AND $2,300.00 . If you are going to keep the MF for a long time rebuild it all the way , IT WILL LASTS YOU. I have used my to35 for 25 year .

Sounds a might bit high to me , I rebuild them quite regulary for around 1500 if nothing needs to be replace like crank,cam...etc. typical kit price is around 800 depends on what you get. I'd shop around some more. 3gs is high for just engine rebuild...in my opnion..

best wishes

Thanks for your reply. Here is what three grand is getting me.

I have been advised that the parts will cost about $1000. Sleeves, pistons, wrist pins, bearings, valves, etc.

The crankshaft had some scoring on the mains and will need to be cut. To me it did not look that bad for something 50 years old but what do I know.

The oil pump shaft was sheared and needs to be fixed.

The govenor was also broken in pieces and in the oil pan.

The block and head will be send out, boiled clean
and checked for leaks and cracks.

He will have to paint the engine after it is reassembled.

I am hopeful that this price also includes the pick up and delivery of the tractor.

Unless it was using oil or knocking,I would have them clean up the crank if it needs it,roll in a set of bearings and a new oil pump.
