Just wondering why you should use the GL 1 pure mineral oil and not straight 90 wt gear oil. What problems might be expected if you use 90 weight gear oil?

Thank you
Greg

The only oil you should use in the trans. is trans/hydraulic fluid because it is the the trans. oil for hydraulics also. Inappropriat oils will waus expensive pribelms like pump failure.
Whatever you do don't use gear oil.

The transmission oil also serves as the hydraulic fluid in this tractor. Plain old gear oil will foam in the hydraulic system and that is bad.

90 weight mineral oil is an oil that is actually refined from mineral oil and not manufactured. The GL-1 rating means that it is meant for low stress situations. GL-1 rating generally means that only anti foaming and anti corrision additives are in the oil. GL-4 and GL-5 rated oils have EP (extreme pressure) additives put in them. Pure mineral based oils will not hold up in modern high heat-high stress machines- they will fry. The MF 65 is not a "modern" machine per se. Here is the rub - the EP additives may damage "yellow" metal parts including brass bushings. Many different companies make GL-1 products that will work in the MF-65 tranny - some are multi-weight 80W-90 and might work better if you are operating in cold temps. A multi weight lube will make your hydraulics run a little faster and it might be easier to shift in the cold. There are also different ways the SAE classification or weight is measured. In motor oil it is the viscosity at engine temp (210ish) in tranny fluid it is the viscosity at tranny temp (150ish). Consequently there can be some discrepancy depending on how the SAE rating was done. An oil's viscosity might be 90 weight at tranny temps but 50 weight at engine temps. If you can get 90 weight mineral oil from your MF dealer get it and use it. Using non-GL-l rated fluid may ruin the tranny for the reasons above stated.
