I am about to buy an MF 165 year 1974. It has a diesel engin (Perkins I suppose), a very fast an strong loader MF38 (accessories forklift, bucket, blade, chains, etc.) Tires 50% in front and rear. It has been outside since 5 or 6 years. I check the engin and tranmission oil, they were clear, no water in it. Two weeks ago I started it very easily (at 0 degres celcius) even if it was standing there since a year without working, even starting. No smoke, easy shifting, multipower works fine, hydraulic works great, loader perfect, etc.. I am about to pay 5400.$US for it. I live in Canada northen part of Quebec, Abitibi. What do you think?

Hi, The price is not bad if it has a loader. I have a 1974 with loader my Dad bought new. Loaders tend to wear out clutches, hydrualic pumps and front ends. Before buying install a pressure guage in the remote hydraulic line and look for 2,800 lb at about 1000 RPM. If it won't come up to 2800 you won't run a lot of hydraulic stuff, a lot require 2200 LBs. Also check Big Deans web site for tips. Whats the hours on it, has it been overhauled, has a clutch been put in it? Bill

Thanks you Bill, you're given me some useful tips. I'll check the hydraulic pressure as you suggest. It has 3150 hours on the counter and the owner told me it was the real time. I don't know if the clutch is new or old but it works find, shifting gear is easy. The PTO double clutch need adjustement because it does not stop turning when the clutch pedal is fully engage. I haven't try yet with machinery hook on it.

Hi, 3100 hours is very low if it is true. It should be in decent shape with those hours. Bill

The PTO doesn't stop turning when you depress the clutch petal because the tractor has a hydraulic PTO that operates independently of the clutch. I have a 1968 MF165 with a hydraulic PTO. It is nice because it can be put in and taken out without using the clutch. Also, if you ever have to replace the clutch, you do not have to but the (more expensive) two stage clutch.

If you can engage the engine PTO without using the clutch, you have the hydraulic PTO.

Most 165's with front end loaders around here have a front pump for the loader, leaving the remotes for other implements.

165's without loaders go for $5400 in my area. sounds like you're getting a pretty good deal.
