We bought a MF 285 about 2 years ago and use it to pull a Woods 15ft batwing. The PTO will spin when you start the tractor without the lever engaged with enough force to spin the mower, however, this seems to lessen as the tractor is used. Then, about two weeks ago, the PTO started to drop off under load, for about 10 seconds or so, then you can feel it re-engage and off you go again, its kind of random, it may do it several time in the span of 30 minutes and then you may go for several hours before it does it again. Also, if you have the mower in a strain, sometime there is a violent grinding sound from the PTO system and it stops pulling. You have to disengage the PTO and re-engage to continue. Any ideas on where to start??

Sometimes it's as simple as checking your hydraulic fluid levels , could be you're low on oil. that PTO pack is pump driven , so your booster pump may be getting weak , how is the MP? Does it slip or disengage? Both run off same pump. Not an easy fix if it is pump , especially with a cab. All pumps are tucked nicely inside where the average back yard mechanic can't get at them. Good Luck.

I bought a 285 two weeks ago and it's doing the some thing, very random. The hydrolics for the loader seem to work fine, just the PTO drops out for 10 sec and the starts spinning again. I've not had any noise in the system though. The hydrolic fluid level is fine. I'll check the filter, then talk to the guy who sold it to me.
