While cutting pasture land with my MF 231. The engine started slowing down and shut down. Tryed starting, wouldn't start. Primed pump on engine and it started. Tought that I might have gotten air in my fuel lines. Blead fuel lines to be sure that their was no air traped in line. Cut grass for about 20 minuits and it shut down again. I let engine rest for a minuite, turned engine over, wouldn't start. Used prime pump and tractor started up. Could it be my thermostat has gone bad or a sensor causing engine to slow down and stop. Yes, I changed my fuel filter 2 months ago. Blead all fuel lines to be sure no air is trapped in line. This is about the 4th time it has happen to me. It doesn't seem to be a fuel problem. Its more like tractor maye be overheating causing engine to shut down. When using tractor to ride around on and not cutting grass it seems to be just fine. Please help if possible.

Neighbors AC 160 did somthing similar. After priming and starting several times over a couple months, checked the flow from tank again and found it to be very small stream. Removed line and fitting from tank and found a brass rivet that had apparently came from the fuel gauge assy, sitting down in the elbow in the bottom of the tank. The vibration and fuel flow apparently caused the rivet to move around and sometimes cut off the fuel flow completely while other times allowed it appear to flow normally.

I had a similar problem years ago with a Massey 165 diesel. It turned out to be a cracked diaphragm in the transfer pump putting air into the fuel system. I didn't see the crack until I held it up to the sun.

its gotta be that fuel line.. u migh have more air in that line than u think.. did that same thing with my mh 44, just dies and wont start, unplugged that hose and let it bleed air out, did like many times before it finally worked fine.. are u driving on hilly? i have hilly and sometimes gas tank is low enough to let air go into the line once u go uphill..

Sbone! Went in field again. Tractor ran good for about 10 minuits. Started looseing RPM and died on me, like it wasn't getting any fuel. Disingauged bush hog and primed fuel pump and tractor started after 5 tries. Started cutting grass again. Ran about 2 minuites, started doing same thing again. Primed fuel pump once again and tractor started. Took tractor home and parked in barn. Will try bleeding fuel lines tomorrow. Sure hope it is just air in lines. No! their are no hills where I live, not in Louisiana. If anyone else has any answers to my problem please Help.

Have you checked your tank vent hole? If it is plugged, you'll have that symptom

It really sounds like a faulty lift pump. No more than they are, I would put on a new one. It probably has a bad diaphram in it sucking air into the system. If that doesnt fix it, then start looking at all the fuel line fittings or the lines themselves for holes or cracks. Also inspect the fuel filters and fuel filter housing. I have seen faulty New filters before.

MF Kid Closed off tank at valve and disconnected fuel line at pump. When I opened valve all the way I was getting was a trickel of fuel with some air bubbles. Tapped on line till I got good stream and connected back to pump. Tractor started right away with no problem. Also cleaned out vent on tank cap. Took to field and cut grass for about 25 minutes with no problem. Will cut pasture land tomorrow and see if I fixed problem. Sure hope so. If it shuts down again will go out and buy a new prime pump. Thanks every one for your help and concern.

You may want to check your tank for debris. It almost sounds like you have garbage "rust" in your tank clogging your fuel line. If this debris gets to the lift pump, it could damage it. Im sure you will find the problem though.

When you guys talk about a falty diphram in the lift pump. Is the lift pump the same thing as the priming pump. Is their any special knowledge I need to know about taking down or off completely prime pump to replace.

Yep, same pump. It's a really simple fix. 2 bolts and 2 lines to disconect. If the new pump is a little hard to get back in, just hit the starter a little to move the cam lobe. Bleed the system and you're ready to go again.
