I have installed a Delco-Remy 55A alternator in place of my old generator. It will not charge and also drains the battery when not running.
Batt terminal on alternator to Starter contactor to battery positive terminal.
#1 terminal to "start" position on ignition switch.
#2 terminal connected same as alternator battery terminal.

KRA,
I'm very familiar with those alternators, but not with your tractor, If your ignition switch also works the starter you have a recipe for trouble hooking it up that way. When the alternator is working it backfeeds out the #1 terminal and could potentially stick your starter on the crank position. In my experience it's best to put a switch in with an accessory side in it, and hook the #1 wire to it.
Also if this was a used alternator or a cheap parts store reman it could have a diode shorted in it causing your drain and making it not work.
Hope this helps, e-mail me if you have anymore questions, jstpa

The #1 terminal can be left disconnected unless it's a very old regulator. It's used to operate the idiot light. You likely have a bad diode in the alternator, Also possibly the regulator now.
