Good morning,

I have a 1965 MF35X with the Perkins Diesel. In reference to an earlier e-mail about it smoking from between the head and block, as well as a lot coming out the breather tube, it was suggested to me that I first check the compression before going further. I'm showing my true rookie colirs here so bear with me. How do I do this? I bought a compression tester, but do not know where to test. Could just be having a brain fart, but I have no experience with diesels. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tony

Danger

Most of compression gauges are for gas engine

if you use a gas engine compression gauge
on a diesel it may explode or spit off the
injector hole and may cause severe injuries.

just my 2 cents

you need to remove the injector from the cylinder, after that you can measure the compression from the injector hole.

If you have a gas tester and you hold it in front of the hole where you took the injector out your reading will be very inaccurate. A true diesel compression will be a specialty item. Remember the compression pressure on a diesel should be 350 psi minimum as a rule of thumb and may exceed 450 psi. A cylinder leak down test may be a much cheaper, better and a more accurate test.

I think I saw a thread about the leak down test while serch the archives. I'll try to find that unless you want to walk me through it. This engine has a lot of little leaks so I bought a full gasket set. Not sure I want to go past the top half at this point though. If I do, I'll past that and diagnose and fix the leak from the weep hole (when in high range). That looks like a lot of work for me from other threads I have seen. As I am also in the middle of an F-20 project (an a full ERP system impleentation at work), I wouldn't mind finding someone within a reasonable drive of Ann Arbor that works on MF35's. What will the leak down test tell me as far as diagnosis?

Thanks,

Tony

Send me an e-mail address and I will send you some information. Which way are you from Ann Arbor I live in that state to the south. I used to work in the Toledo area. I have a good M-F dealer five miles from me.

It should be showing now. Thanks. I live barely outside of Ann Arbor to the west.
