We have a MF 180 diesel. Recently the transmission stuck in one of the foward gears. From the speed, it appears to be second.

This tractor has a shift lever for high/low range in a straight slot, and a shift lever for reverse and 1-3 forward in an H shape slot.

The high/low range works fine. Neutral in high/low works also.

The forward/reverse shift lever will not pull out of gear. While there is slight play, it is near the center of the H slot. I can move it a small distance left and right, but not up and down to bring it out of gear.

I have taken the upper housing off the tractor for a better view, although it is still hard to see exactly what is happening.

The shift rods are connected down to the transmission housing.

I don't know if the problem is in the center shaft that the shift rods rotate on, or in the transmission itself. While I can work on the basics, I am not a mechanic.

Can anyone offer advice as to what corrective measures could be tried?

Thanks

Do what ray said, 99% sure you don't have a big problem. About a miniute with a screw driver should have you going.

Visit Big Dean's website and read the solution to this fairly common problem. This is the address to his photo/tips page: http://photos.yahoo.com/bigdean63
