MF50 throttle

I have a 1960 MF50 that starts and runs well but I can't get it to idle below 1000-1200 rpms. The throttle lever seems to be up as far as it will go. Its sort of springy so I have to hold it in place to keep the idle low. Sometimes after its been running a while I can get it down to 850 or so but I'm told it should idle around 400-500 rpm. (is that correct?) Also, I need to constantly increase and decrease the throttle depending if I'm going up or downhill or whenever the load changes. Shouldn't the governor automatically adjust to keep the engine running at a steady rpm? This is really a pain when mowing. If the governor is out of whack, is this something an average Joe could figure out or is this best left to a pro? Thanks!

Jt, I have a '58 MF50. The throttle and governor work together to set and maintain rpm. It sounds like yours may need adjustment. The process is not difficult but it does need to be done in specific order. I suggest you get a service manual and try adjustment before you take anything apart. You may need to fiddle with the length of the carburator rod. Mine did not work right when I set by the instructions.

Thanks! I'll try that. One more question. I hear different advice regarding what type of oil to use (for the crank case). Any suggestions?
Thx. jt
