MF 65 getting tired

I think my MF 65 may be in need of an overhaul soon. 1962 G-176 continental motor with unknown hours.

For the last few hours of operation (plow\bush hog) it has been puffing a little white/grey smoke, started not long after the last motor oil change.

Overhauled the carb about 20 hours back, and more recently replaced the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, etc. and adjusted valves. The coolant and oil look fine and pressures are good so I don't suspect a leaky/cracked head. I guess I need to give up my hopes, compression test it and confirm what I suspect.

I have little/no experience with continental motors. How long will these motors run tired? I'd like to make it to the winter before I have to tear it down but would rather not cause damage. Is an in-place overhaul worth the time savings or should I assume the crank is sloppy and go through the whole thing? Any known problems/weak points on these motors? Thanks Craig

From what you have said what makes you so sure it is a cracked head? I would suspect worn out rings or cylinder sleeves.

If oil and coolent are not intermixing and you have low compression on one cylinder then I would that is the source of your oil consumption.
