Found in my notes where I could replace the Massey Ferguson part # MF 1447 082M1 spin-on oil filter with a Wix 51460 or a Fram PH2895. This could result in 5 dollars savings every oil change. I do not remember where I got the info, probably from this forum. Wondering if any of you all have subsituted these filters and what kind of results you have had. I do hate to experiment on the Ferggie, but five dollars is five dollars. Thanks

I've used the spin on adapters on my 150 and 165 for several years. They are much easier to use. Fran 2870A filters fit. I can't remember the Wix number--I just have the parts guy to cross reference. I think that Wix makes a good filter.

I retrofitted my Perkins diesel powered MF50 with the spin-on filter and so far so good. I don't put enough hours on my tractor (yet) to justify changing oil more than once a year. Having said that, I buy my filter from my MF dealer, even though it costs more. Reason - this particular dealer is very good, stocks a lot of parts and spends a lot of time with me, even though I am not a customer who spends a lot of $$$ there. Sooo, I figure it ain't going to break my wallet to do a bit of business with them and in doing so, maybe I help keep in business a very good dealer. That is worth something to me beyond the cost of the filter.

Hi Bill,

I totally agree with you on this one!! We converted our MF to spin on fuel filters, adapter coming from a VW diesel. Once we convert the oil to a spin on, I will buy fronm th dealer for the same reasons as you. No matter how much or hw little a person spends at our deler, they both get excellent treatment!! And their prices on onther Items such as gas trimmers are cheaper that some BIGGER stores out there, needless to say the get alot of business from me, or as much as I can give!!

Thannks,

Will

The Wix filters are very good. We have used them on all of our equipment. NAPA filters are made by Wix and the only difference is 1 number on the filter.

We've converted 5 of ours to spin-on, the first one in 1977.

Results have been much better - no cocked cannister or twisted o-rings to leak, no filter sitting in the botton of the cannister because the spring got misplaced..... (or, in one case, installed on top of the cartridge...!).

We've used many brands of filters, with no apparent differences. I say apparently, because poor filtering could take years to show up, especially if you're careful with cleanliness, and change oil regularly.

There was a web site comparing different oil filter cartridge manufacturers. The chap bought a dozen brands of a particular filter, opened them with a lathe, and found that Fram had 25 to 30% less filter paper area than most others (and Fram makes several store brands, I understand...).

The website is no longer around. (It occurred to me that possibly a manufacturer used some strong-arm tactics on the gentleman.... but then, I tend to be cynical at times... businesses are alwaye ethical.... aren't they? I also enjoy stories starting "Once upon a time"...!!!)

The filter for the VW gas engine fits the MF adaptor perfectly. It's a half inch shorter than the MF filter, and a quarter the price.

This might be something to be concerned about.
The perkins filter have a bypass rating of 10-12 psi. the vw filter is rated at 36 psi.
It seems like a person could use a ford car type filter (7-12 psi) if they are not too thick. If a person is determined a spacer could be made to set the mounting away from the engine.
