I have an early massey ferguson 180 with the continental G206 engine. It destroyed two distributors, and i was told that the problem was most likely the cam. I am going to take the front cover off the engine and have a look. What should i be looking for? How do i tell if the timing gears are good, and how do i tell if the camshaft is bad? Thanks for any help.
Josh

Josh,
Don't know the similarities between your engine and my Z134, but mine was doing the same thing. Big Dean responded to my post several years ago & told me I probably wouldn't find any good news behind the front cover-he was right. The nut that threads onto the end of the cam and holds on the timing gear and, as I recall, the governor plate, had come off and stripped out the threads. New cam time. This began an entire engine overhaul as compression tests weren't great either. Other possibilities you may find are that the threads and nut have broken entirely off the end of the cam or the timing gears themselves are worn or broken (Mine were worn beyond use also-need a manual and a dial indicator to check timing gear backlash/wear). You should be able to look down the hole where the distributor mounts and check out the condition of the dist. drive gear teeth on the cam. Mine were fine, all the grief was at the front cover end. There is no shortcut to fixing this. You're probably looking at a new cam, maybe timing gears, and if you're in that deep there's probably lots more you might as well do. If you delay your just buying another distributor. Hope I'm wrong and someone more familiar with that particular engine say's, Don't listen to IowaDave, all you need to do is put $2.00 worth of fix-it-all additive to the oil and it will be fine".

The G206 is getting rare. I'm unsure of your visual access to determine the need of gears,
verses cam. Same engine in early 175. There
were about six of these MF's, at Larson Imp.
Cambridge,MN 800-578-4440, in various parted out
condition. One of them might have your cam/parts,
that was a while ago. Good luck getting some
honest eyes on your engine.
