Hi all, For the past couple of weeks I have been looking at a massey 165 orchard model tractor with 4 cyl diesel, live hydraulics, live PTO, PS, heavy duty rear end, diff lock, good tires, It has lights, High/Low trans(Not multipower), good sheet metal, wheel weights and front weights, And thats about it. I have test driven it and it runs great, drives great, steers great, and dosen't pop out of any gears. The hyd's work good, Live pto works. Had good oil preshure. Brakes work good, It has the wet brakes on it. Now, What would y'all pay for this tractor? The dealer said he'd take $6000 cash. Is this a fair price? Thanks ,TractorMike

Value? 1974 MF-165 4 cyl, 204 CID Diesel, xmsn 8F-2R, 52 PTO HP, 4855 lbs, lo 3640, mid 5210, hi 6200 lbs. Sounds like its worth the higher end.
If needed have a friend or mechanic check it out and render you an opinion seperate from the seller of the rig. Good luck.

Visit autorv.com and look up MF165. One is advertised this week for $4500.

I was at an auction Saturday 4/10 which had a MF 165 diesel for sale. The diesel had a recent overhaul and ran very good. Three point worked good and had good tires. Tractor looked very used overall though. It was not an orchard. The high bid was around $3200 but it was PO because reserve was $3750. For comparison a MF 35 gas went for $2200 and a Ferguson TO 30 went for $800, both running and in fair to good shape. The auction was in MS.

I was just at an auction Thursday (4-8-04) and they had a MF165 go for $4300. It had a gas Z-174 engine in it. All the "options" you stated on the tractor are standard except for the Orchard sheetmetal, wheel weights and the diff lock. I would agree that no more than $4000 to $4500. Just remember there are lots of used tractors around.

i have a MF 255 which I bought new in 81. It is worth between $5000 to 6000 in an orchard farming area. The MF 165, I beleive, was made until 75 or 76. Does the tractor have 24 or 26" rear tires? A fair price is around $4500 to $5000, depending on your need and use of the tractor. They are very reliable tractors with the Perkins engine and the Ferguson hudraulic system. Good luck. Ray

Sounds quite high- which is natural, if it's a dealer selling it. But it sounds like a good tractor. In my opinion, I'd be hesitant to pay more than $4,500. You could go down there with cash and make him an offer, and walk if he doesn't accept it. There's always lots of room on dealer items for negotiation....and if business is slow.... Then again, it might almost be worth paying that if you had to, -it might be worth all the time and driving you save looking at others. If you're like me, I HATE wasting my time going to see tractors that are supposed to be good, and you drive an hour, and they turn out to be junk. I've gotten to the point where I hate shopping for used anything anymore....but i can't afford new...or dealer prices...so I must.

Richie,

I agree, I too am getting tired of driving to look at something that someone has listed as being in very good condition, only to find out that it is a beat up piece of junk that would take $$$$ to fix up. The worst part is they have it priced as if it was really sharp and won't come down. A day wasted, but like you say, we don't have much choice since new tractors and major implements are priced way too high for the average joe to buy.

>>>>The worst part is they have it priced as if it was really sharp and won't come down.<<<<<

Isn't that the truth, Jim!

Funny thing- If I'm selling something, it could be mint, and I ask a reasonable price for it- not top dollar.....and I have trouble selling it. When I'm looking to buy something, everyone's asking top dollar for stuff with major flaws- and I think of all the perfectly good things I sold for half the price!

But even if i had the money, I'd still feel stupid paying the dealer prices! And even though their items always look so nice....when you talk to people who bought them and paid top dollar, it turns out they have troubles too.

I think all these "blue books" are killing the used market too.....just like with used cars. You've got a book that says something's worth so much.....but you don't have people willing to pay that much- so the cars sit for a year and never sell- and if your looking to buy, good luck finding something at a realistic price. And the sellers will let the item sit for a year, rather than saying "Gee...no ones biting at this price, I guess it's too high...maybe i'll lower it." It's screwing up the whole idea of supply and demand, and the notion that something's only worth what someone's willing to pay for it. I used to like looking at used stuff- sometimes I'd even get a good deal- but now.....it's just a waste of time. Heck, the only time I've gotten a good deal on used cars in the last ten years, is when I had my tow truck, and used to pick up junk cars for free or sometimes a nominal payment, like $35- some of those cars would turn out to be better than the cars people were asking $1500 for!

Richie, youre exactly right, cobber. exact same thing down under, worth nothing to trade in or sell privately, try and buy it is a different story. all the dealers down here think they are doing you a big favour by "taking it off your hands", meanwhile they are making more out of the trade than the new one. clobber them in the ear with a woomera or a didgeeridoo is what they need. cooee and i,ll put a shrimp on the barbee for ya. cheers!!!! .P.S. look out for the boomerangs. hehehe!!!!

Yeah, Sibby, these dealers make ya wonder if Ned kelly isn't still alive! [For Americans: Ned Kelly= Australian version of Jesse James]

When America started going down the tubes, it looked like Australia was still hanging in....but you guys seem to be catching up fasy :(

Other than the American and Jap brands of tractors, do you Aussies have any tractors that are uniquely Australian?

Oh...this is completely off-topic....but do you remember a kids TV show from years ago- "Skippy The Kangaroo"? I saw it when I was a kid...it was on briefly here....and I know it was australian...but no one else remembers it. (Mother And Son was on briefly here, too- I loved that show! -Ironic, for a guy who doesn't have TV, I know all these obscure shows!)

Tie me kangaroo down, mate!

Rich

Richie, yeah i remember those shows also, couldnt miss an episode after school. mother and son still rerun on Austar sattelite t.v. unique Aussie tractor was the Chamberlain, built in west aussieland. all had beaut Perkins diesel engines till john deere bought them out in 90s and kind of glamourised and complicated em an fitted their j.d. engines, sales collapsed and now theres only j.d. look up on the web(Chamberlain trek) ,a group of aussies take a trip on their old 9gs across top of west australia. anyway cobber, have a good one an yea, ned kelly was a gentleman compared to those machinery dealers, cunning as a fox and as fat as a wombat from all their profits. cheers!!!!
