MF35 tranny/hyd oil filter?

Trying to change the oil in the tranny for the 1st time on my MF35 diesel deluxe. The operators manual says that inside the PTO lever cover is a filter assembly. I drain the oil and take the cover off and find...no sign of a filter. I don't see where one would even attach to the pump assembly. Do not all MF35's have a filter? Or is it in a different location?

By the way, there was a fair amount of water that came out first before the oil at both plugs. Do MF's tend to accumulate condensation in the oil?

Hello Evan -

There are 5 points for water to get into the transmission; the guys below caught three of them.

The fourth is the breather under the seat (1/8" pipe thread into the top cover) - if the cap is off some water will run in.

The fifth is the rubber boot around the top link attach point/master control spring. If the boot is cracked (and most are now, after 45 years!) that can act like a big funnel.

Strainers were fitted to later models - I can't find a cut-off date or chassis number for that change. It prolongs the life of the pump a bit if you aren't particularly careful about clean oil.

It's a fairly coarse mesh as filters go, not like the 25 or 10 micron cartridge filters fitted to later systems.

I wouldn't go to the bother of installing one if it's not there.

Jack

EVAN, they collect condensation every time they cool down after they have been working, e.g. whenthe air inside the trans, rear end cools down it forms moisture particles which condense and drip into oil. thats why its best to refuel fuel tank when finished work, as same thing happens with fuel tank! early 35, 65 did not have a strainer, but could be fitted as an accessory afterwards, dont really think they are worth fitting, as i have seen them work for years without, just another thing to starve hyd oil pump for feed,e.g. ,with cold weather or thicker oil till it heats up.any way, run tractor for a while till it heats up, drain oil well, then add new oil. do you leave the tractor outside at times and water can enter rear end oil through gear stik seals(rubber boots). they could need replacing. cheers and good luck!!!

Hi,

My Dads 1959 MF (FE) 35 does not have a filter inside. Condensation build up was minor. Check both of your shifter boots, and if they look dry or cracked, dont take any chances, goto you local MF/AGCO dealer, and get 2 new ones. Also make sure the plug on the to of the tranny to the left of the shifter is not loose.

I hope this helps!!

Will
