I'm buying a mf180 and the dealer is repairing the multipower for me before I take delivery.

What are the most common problems associated with the multipower shifting and ways to prevent most common breakdowns/damage associated with the multipower in the future? How do you protect the tractor from the owner????? ?

Regards,

Dan

I have been around MF tractors all my life and we never had problems with multipower. My dad and uncle both had 180's and they were famous for the hydrolics going out on the 3-point. Hitch it to something heavy like a plow and make sure it can lift something. I remember my dads 180 lift was rebuilt twice, & when it got bad it couldn't lift a 3-bottom plow, my uncle's did the same thing too.

A friend that I planted soybeans for(900+ acres) had two 1080 Masseys with multi-power. I pulled a Kinze(aka John Deere) eight row no till with these tractors for six years. We also pulled a Great Plains drill/planter. We ran in second high and shifted down when things got tight. These mp's worked well but we also kept new fluids and especially filters changed yearly. I also used the 1080's to bale 10,000 bales of straw each summer. He sold the 1080's and bought two 383's with cab and air. (finally!) The mp will serve you well.

I have a multipower on my 1976 255MF and have had no problems. I understand that you should not run for long periods of time in the low MP range. Something about the oil flow. I always run in High MP range and if I get in a tight, down shift with the MP. As soon as I clear the tight spot I shift back to high.

If the dealer does a good repair and the tractor is treated right, the new MP should last a long time!
