T'was looking at an MF 165 today. The PTO kept turning, regardless of whether the clutch was in or out. The owner says T'is a busted PTO brake..... I think it's the 2-stage clutch. Anyway to tell for sure?

You can't stay away from those Massey's, can you? Should've kept that 85 ;-) Good Luck on the search for the next one.

Good memory!, Marty, is it?

Ah, yes...my first tractor- the MF85 with trip-bucket loader! If it wasn't a gas job, i would've kept 'er!

No complaints with my Fergie TO-20....just need something a little bigger. Fergie works just fine, but I'm pushing her....often operating at full throttle, burning lots of gas, and not having enough power sometimes to make a clean cut with the bush-hog through the thick stuff (especially when going up a steep hill)

The nice thing is, I'm not desperate for another tractor- so I can take my time, and wait for something good at a fair price..... and maybe ten years from now, i'll find something! (With most of the farm auctiuons around here being on Saturday- and that being the one day that i can't attend, it makes it hard to get anything!)

Take care,

Rich

Yes, it's me. You'll find one soon enough, there are lot's more out there that aren't "Saturday Sale Specials"! If I see a bargain I'll holler.

Hey, thanks!, Marty.

I'm basically looking for a diesel between 35-60 HP- no particular brand or model. (Uh...maybe not a Belarus though!)...for not much more than $4K.

I had someone wanting to buy my Fergie for good money...but I lost him, because there aren't many tractors for sale around here in my price range.

Rich

Hi, I have a 165d that the PTO turns all the time unless it has a load on it. Works OK other wise, I use the PTO all the time. Bill

Hi There, Bill,

Sounds like your PTO brake just needs adjusting.

On the one i was looking at, the PTO turned with power...even with a load.

Richie, does it have two or three positions on pto lever? if two positions its ipto with brake, three position its engine speed in back position, neutral in middle, ground speed with lever pulled forward. no brake on 2 stage, could have a stuck pto plate or pto clutch needs adjusting. cheers!!

Thanks, Sibby!

It has a two position lever.

It could still be the clutch causing the problem though, right? I was just wondering if there's anyway to tell, without taking it apart.

The motor hums like a didgerydoo- but I wouldn't want to pay fair market value for a tractor that needs to be split.

Thanks, mate!

G'day!

Rich

(sorry....I couldn't resist!)

Richie, youre right on track cobber!! no easy fix for an ipto, take a shortcut and it will boomerang, (come back to haunt you, matey). could be buckled drive plates in pto pack. could it have been caused by oil starvation e,g, choked pump strainer, low oil pressure to pack? good luck and cheers!!!

Hi!

My mf 168 also has this problem, when the oil is cold and there's no load(or light load only) on the p.t.o, the pto shaft keeps turning. Only problem it usually causes is that you have to shut off the tractor to connect something to the p.t.o. Or if it's warm you can usually stop the pto by hand(be careful with this).
