I have a 1979 245 Diesel, that I have to keep replacing starter solenoids in. My Dad bought it new, I know he put at least 6 on it, & I have put 3 since I got it about 3 years ago. I used it yesterday & it started fine, today I had to use a screwdriver to start it. I have been buying the aftermarket ones at autozone, would a real Massey one be any better? Hope someone has some ideas. Thanks, Davis

We have a 1978 and a 1980 245 and we've only replaced one solenoid, 5300 hours total. If you can jump the solenoid with a screwdriver then your neutral switch is fine. I pulled one end off and reversed the copper terminal(bat) and it's still going. Massey, now AGCO, doesn't make solenoids, the aftermarket does. If you don't like A-Z then try another retailer, I doubt if one bought from a dealer would be any better. Does it have high hours or hard to start, turns over slowly? May be time for a starter rebuild but not until you solve the solenoid problem, 9 is too much!

MF, how can you say the safety start switch is good? if it will start by shorting out battery to solenoid circuit with a screwdriver, this is confirming that there is a break in continuity between battery to solenoid activating wire on starter, whether it be a connection, switch etc. how then can it NOT be in the starter circuit? dunno, ive only been skinning my knuckles on these things for 34 years anyways!!!!! !!!!! !THINK!

Think?? That makes the noggin hurt. Let me explain in more detail; take the safety switch and throw it away, place the L-N-H lever in L or H, take other lever and put in N, and short out the starter solenoid. It will turn over, yes? It doesn't 'necessarily' mean the saftey switch is bad or good(it was thrown away), could be the wires, or the ignition switch, or the solenoid circuitry, also. I didn't question the starter cicuit issue. Sorry for the confusion. PS -wear gloves for those knuckles.

MF,ok. that is the whole point i am try to make. the problem is between the battery to the solenoid activating wire as i pointed out before. the solenoid is not at fault if it works when terminals are bridged at starter motor itself, it is bypassing the s/s switch, turn key switch, and complete circuit. my original posting was if no start with key, disconnect wires at s/s and join together, thus eliminating s,s, if it then turns engine with key ,gearstiks in (N), THEN itMUST be the s/s switch at fault ,can you catch my drift. to me this is a process of pure elimination. dont worry, gloves are off, and i am also sorry if my response is confusing.cheers, sibby!!!!! !!

Tractor only has 1000 hrs, Starts fast (When Starter works) I think I'll try one from NAPA this time & clean all terminals & connections.

I'm going to sell you a $25000.oo car and put up a sign no lemon returns are if it blows up 50 times are you going to come back and get it fixed for free or just eat it and buy another new one ..... .. ok same idea if it tests good gess you better look at key switch and safty switch and wiring

which brand of starter motor do you have? we have eight masseys with lucas starters, have only replaced one solenoid in over thirty years, and that was on an m.f. 1100 with a delco starter. they do not like being started with low battery voltages, is your battery charged up when you try starting it? cheers!!!

Sibby, thanks for reply. Mine has Delco starter, & battery has a good charge. It does not even click when I try to start. But it fires right up if I jump terminals with a screwdriver. I plan to check battery & ground connections before I put another solenoid on. Regards, Davis

Davis, if connections and battery terminals check out o.k., you probably have a defective safety start switch. try shifting range gearstick from lo, n. hi. a few times and then try and restart engine. another way to test saf. start. is remove rubber boot by sliding along two wires and undoing wires from switch and connecting together to bypass switch. ENSURE your gears are in neutral and then try and start, by doing this you are bypassing the saf. start circuit and it can be started in gear and take off. switch is mounted top front of gearbox in front of steering box. if it now starts remove s/s switch by unscrewing and screwing new one back in and reconnecting wires which can be connected to either terminal. hope this helps, regards sibby!!!

Thanks for help, Sibby & M-F..... Neutral switch checked good when I put in last solenoid a few months ago, I did not check it yesterday. I am going to go through all the wiring related to starter, switch & neutral switch..... . Something else has to be wrong to cause so many solenoid failures. Thanks & Regards, Davis
